Overview
Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on Big Bear Lake offer a peaceful, immersive way to experience the beauty of the San Bernardino Mountains from the water. Multiple rental companies operate around the lake, providing single and tandem kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards with life jackets included.
Typical rates: single kayaks run $49 for 2 hours up to $89–95 for a full day (8 hours), tandems $54–100, and stand-up paddleboards around $89/day. A $3 BBMWD permit fee applies per vessel. Veteran's Park offers a private dock where equipment is already on the water and staff help you launch; Boulder Bay is a popular self-launch with carts provided. Some outfitters also offer delivery anywhere around the lake for a flat $25 each way (8-hour minimum).
Early morning paddles are particularly magical, when the lake is glassy calm and wildlife is most active — keep an eye out for bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons. The lake's many coves and inlets offer sheltered paddling perfect for beginners, while more experienced paddlers can venture across the open water to explore the full 7-mile length. Sunset paddles are another popular option, offering unforgettable views as the sun dips behind the mountains.
