Overview
Big Bear Lake is the crown jewel of the San Bernardino National Forest — a pristine 7-mile-long alpine lake sitting at 6,743 feet elevation, with 23 miles of shoreline and 3,300 surface acres. The lake is the centerpiece of the Big Bear Valley and offers an incredible range of water activities from late spring through early fall.
Fishing enthusiasts will find the lake regularly stocked with rainbow trout and home to healthy populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, blue catfish, crappie, and common carp. Note that no live bait is permitted on Big Bear Lake. The annual Fishin' for 50k Trout Derby each June draws anglers from across Southern California — five tagged fish are released, each worth $10,000 — and the Big Bear Troutfest in October celebrates the fall fishery. Whether you prefer shore fishing or renting a pontoon, the lake's calm waters are ideal for beginners and seasoned anglers alike.
Beyond fishing, the lake is perfect for boating, swimming, kayaking, and soaking in the breathtaking mountain scenery. Public beaches and launch ramps provide easy access, and boat rentals are available at Holloway's Marina, Pleasure Point Marina, Big Bear Marina, and Captain John's Fawn Harbor & Marina. On a warm summer day, there's nothing quite like floating on the crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering pines and mountain peaks.
