Overview
The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is not your typical zoo — it's a dedicated wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center that provides a forever home to animals that cannot be returned to the wild. Located in the Moonridge area at over 6,700 feet elevation, the zoo is home to more than 127 resident animals, including black bears, mountain lions, bald eagles, bobcats, gray wolves, arctic foxes, and snow leopards.
Every animal at the zoo has a rescue story, and the staff is passionate about sharing these stories with visitors. Daily animal encounters and educational presentations give visitors an up-close look at the incredible wildlife of the mountains and beyond. Kids especially love the interactive experiences, including the opportunity to watch feeding times and learn about animal care.
The zoo operates year-round (weather permitting — on heavy snow days it may open late or close for snow removal) and hosts special seasonal events including Boo at the Zoo for Halloween and holiday celebrations in December. The facility also runs important conservation programs and serves as a teaching center for wildlife biology. Last entry is 3:30 PM. A visit to the Alpine Zoo is both educational and heartwarming, making it a must-do activity for families visiting Big Bear.
