Overview
Horseback riding in Big Bear offers a peaceful and memorable way to explore the mountain landscape. Baldwin Lake Stables — the valley's main outfitter — runs guided trail rides that wind through pine forests, open meadows, and along ridgelines with sweeping views of the valley below.
Rides are available for all experience levels, with options ranging from one-hour introductory rides up to four-hour wilderness excursions, plus the popular sunset rides. For longer excursions you can pack a lunch — the tour stops for a bite before heading back. No prior riding experience is necessary. Guides match riders with gentle, well-trained horses and provide instruction before hitting the trail. Minimum age for trail rides is 7 years and 4 feet tall. For younger kids there are pony rides around the petting zoo area (children must be 70 lbs or less).
The trails pass through some of the most scenic terrain in the San Bernardino Mountains, and it's common to spot wildlife including deer, hawks, and squirrels along the way. Sunset rides are particularly popular during summer months, when golden light filters through the pines and the air cools to a perfect temperature. The on-site Baldwin Lake Petting Zoo is open weekends year-round, weather permitting, for $5 per person from 11 AM - 3 PM.
